Corner Cocktail Bar, Northern Quarter, Manchester

By Jo Cooksey

The Hatters Hostel group has a rather fabulous new addition to its offering in the Northern Quarter. They have opened the cellar below the West Corner deli/diner on Hilton Street, as a prohibition style cocktail bar, complete with bookable tables and table service.

The venue isn’t immediately obvious but if the eagle-eyed amongst you spot it there is a buzzer to gain entrance. The steps down into the intimate club are very steep but the space itself has nods to a bygone age including photographs of gangsters. The seating is a combination of booths and table and chairs.

The cocktail menu has been developed around vintage style glasses, such as the coupette and the highball and it is innovative and different. There are familiar drinks on there, such as the Old Fashioned but the CCC are doing them with a twist such as a rum combined sherry version. Plus, they have a selection of rare spirits to peruse if cocktails aren’t your thing.

As well as drinkies the club has a sharing platter selection that includes mini beef burgers, mini veggie burgers, 5 Cheese Mac ‘n’ Cheese with Pepper Bacon, Sweet Potato fries and the most unctuous, lip-smacking, addictive Brisket Balls you will have in your life.

The club will only be open from 7pm on a Friday and Saturday evening and bookings can be made from the end of next week, when the bar’s new website will be up and running. In the meantime, you can book via the email address given below. There is no set time for how long you can spend at your table and there will always be tables kept for walk-ins.

If you can find it, you should try it.
